Toen ik daarstraks terugreed van mijn zaterdagse supermarktinkopen klonk er op Radio 1 een liedje dat ik al lang niet meer gehoord had. De enige top-10 hit die Bob Dylan in België ooit gehad heeft naar het schijnt: het instrumentale Wigwam. De radioman deed er nogal smalend over, noemde het slechte muziek en vergeleek het met James Last.
Het is inderdaad atypische Dylanmuziek. We hadden dat vroeger thuis. Bleek dat nu net het enige singletje van Dylan dat mijn vader ooit gekocht heeft. Ik vind het nummer in alle geval toch niet slecht. Het heeft wel iets qua sfeer vind ik. Het lijkt een beetje op een jazz-solo, met de menselijke stem als solo-instrument. De vergelijking met James Last vind ik ook nogal denigrerend. Mij doet het meer aan Sydney Bechet denken.
Zei de radioman nog: "In die tijd werd er wel meer dergelijke slechte muziek gemaakt. Er was ook nog Jonathan Richman." Ja, maar dat was wel een kleine tien jaar later! Naar het schijnt heb ik dat misverstaan en doelde hij op Jonathan Livingstone Seagull van Neil Diamond. Ook een plaat die we hadden thuis, al ben ik daar nooit zo'n fan van geweest.
Op youTube staan er vrijwel alleen maar covers van Wigwam. Ik heb wel het volgende gevonden.
